Chomping at the Bit

Howdy fellow patio gardeners,

Patio Gardner Dirk is “chomping at the bit”!!! The snow is melting, the sun is getting warmer, the spring birds are arriving, Old Man Winter is loosening his strangle-hold. All of my thoughts are consumed by the ideas I have for my garden this coming season, and fresh tomato sandwiches.

Spring is just around the corner and it’s time to get those seeds started. The flower seeds that will provide the fragrant smells, the stunning colors, the simple beauty. The vegetable seeds that will produce the best tasting vegetables ever. Seeds started indoors, about 6-8 weeks before going to live outside, will be much healthier and stronger.

The growing season here in Northeast Pennsylvania is kind of short. About 3 months at best for tomatoes, peppers, and squash. A little longer, say 4 months, from last frost in spring to first frost in fall. It is nearly impossible to produce any quality veggies by putting seeds directly into the garden. Except for maybe zucchini, which will produce under any conditions, anywhere in the world!

I like to start my seeds in a starter tray like this one. Add some starter mix to each cell and poke in 1 or 2 seeds.

Put the cells into the reservoir tray, add water, and cover with the clear dome, for a greenhouse effect, that will hold in heat and moisture.

Place it in a sunny window or under a fluorescent light and watch em’ grow.
