February 6th, 2010 Container Gardening and Have You Ever…
Come on now, be it inside or outside we have all done it. Myself included. Actually, it has been my experience that it is easier to kill a plant than to sucessfully grow one. Overwatering, underwatering, too much fertilizer, not enough food, lack of sunlight, disease, etc. For me personally, Mother Nature is my worst enemy!!
Ahh, Mother Nature, thou art heartless!!!
Every year I plant a vegetable garden out back, and every year, with Mother Nature’s help, I manage to kill a plant or two. I hate when that happens. It usually happens far enough into the season that it is too late to plant a new one.
Solution? Container Gardening.

Self Watering Containers are the Bee’s Knees so to speak. Plant flowers or vegetables in one, and you would have to “intentionally try” in order to kill it. They take over/under watering out of the equation. Just remember to never let the water reservior go dry. Use potting soil, or better yet, Garden Soil from a Garden Center and you’ll be soil bourne disease free. Many Self Watering Containers come with Fertilizer Patches that you lay on top and will last the entire season. Flowers don’t really need fertilizer, as most flowers bloom more prolific in poor soil. Sweet soil makes for nice foilage but fewer blooms.
Take that Mother Nature!!!
I’ve added a few of my favorite books on Container Gardening in Patio Gardener Dirk’s Store to the left under Blogroll. Read up. Learning and keeping informed is your best defense against the “fickleness” that is Mother Nature, and will ultimately help in keeping you from killing any more poor little defenseless plants.
